AI Regulation in Security Domains
A big thank you to Thomas Albermann, is a Senior Associate specializing in data and AI regulation at Bird & Bird, one of the top tech (and more) law firms out there. On Monday, Thomas took our AI & Security master’s class though a guided, interactive tour of the EU’s AI Act.
He got us thinking about the gray areas separating prohibited, high risk and minimal-risk AI: a seemingly identical application of AI in human resources can land in any of the three categories. These distinctions matter, as violations against prohibited AI rules can cost a company up to 7% of global annual revenue or 35m EUR, while minimal risk AI systems involve almost no regulatory requirements.
The most controversial and topical question for us? Does Palantir’s cooperation with several German states represent predictive policing, a prohibited AI practice? And if so, how can concerned citizens trigger the AI Act to protect their rights?
